Summary

MacKayla Lane faces the ultimate threat when war breaks out between the kingdoms of shadow and light, as the #1 New York Times bestselling Fever series races to an explosive revelation。

From the moment MacKayla Lane arrived in Dublin to hunt her sister’s murderer, she’s had to fight one dangerous battle after the next: to survive, to secure power, to keep her city safe, to protect the people she loves。

The matter of who’s good and who’s evil can be decided by the answer to a single question: Whose side are you on?

Now, as High Queen of the Fae, Mac faces her greatest challenge yet: ruling the very race she was born to hunt and kill - a race that wants her dead yesterday, so they can put a pure-blooded Fae queen on the throne。

But challenges with her subjects are the least of her concerns when an ancient, deadly foe resurfaces, changing not only the rules of the game but the very game itself, initiating a catastrophic sequence of events that have devastating consequences and leave Mac questioning everything she’s ever learned and everyone she’s ever loved。 Now begins an epic battle between Mortal and Fae, Seelie and Unseelie, would-be kings and would-be queens, with possession of the Unseelie King’s virtually unlimited power and the fate of humanity at stake。

From the exquisite, deadly gardens of the High Queen’s court, to long-forgotten truths found in the Sacred Grove of Creation, from the erotic bed of her enigmatic, powerful lover to the darkest, seductive reaches of the Unseelie kingdom, Mac’s final journey takes her places no human has been before, and only one human could possibly survive。。。One who's willing to sacrifice everything。

In the beginning, it seems like Cruce wants to give his court a proper home and a place in the world (which is very noble and good intentioned) and also have Mac by his side。 At the end, he doesn't care about any of his creations。 To Cruce, they're all a means to an end of getting Mac as quickly as possible。 I feel like this also conflicts with the moral of the story, which to me is "good intentions matter when things go wrong。" Cruce had good intentions at the beginning。 But by the end, he's painted as some crazed monster who deserved what happened to him。 That doesn't feel consistent with the message presented in Dani's arc。Speaking of, Dani's arc felt contrived and pointless。 Her trial with the Hunters is centered around her abuse of Shazam's love for her。 First of all, I don't see how she abused his love for her at all。 I can see two main instances that were referenced: throwing her star to Ryodan for her, and shifting her into Hunter form for her instead of letting her doing it herself。 In the case of the star, she was concerned that Ryodan would be worried about her sudden disappearance, hence her desire to send a message。 The rule broken here was that Shazam messed with time。 Shazam didn't have to send the star back in time。 In High Voltage, it's made out like Shazam just had bad aim and sent it back in time rather than straight to when Dani left。 Like it was an accident。 But here, Shazam did it on purpose? What would the point of sending Dani's "I'm okay" message if he wouldn't meet her for another few thousand years? Why did he "break the rules" if it wasn't an accident? There's no point to it other than to create an offense for her trial。 The second offense was that Dani was having Shazam shift her because she couldn't do it on her own。 That's incredibly inconsistent with Dani's character。 She would have wanted to be able to shift alone。 She's not a lazy person at all and her wanting Shazam to shift her "because she can't do it" is really out of character for her。 She would try until she got it, and as far as I could tell from the very little we got to see of her actually trying to shift on her own, she was trying。 This trial came out of nowhere for no reason, seemingly for the reason of giving Ryodan motivation for wanting to be the new King。 Speaking of Ryodan, he does nothing throughout the entire book。 Him and Barrons。 Ryodan hosts meetings and worries about Dani, Barrons sits back and lets Mac handle things poorly herself。 It felt like Ryodan was lying around waiting for his story to kick in at the very end。 And as for Barrons, it's out of character for him as well to let Mac let her emotions get the best of her over and over again。 He gave her one good call out at the beginning, then occasionally warns Mac to get ahold of herself, never once interfering。 Why? It's somewhat explained in one of the epilogues, but it doesn't feel quite like an explanation and rather just an admittance that Barrons did nothing。 Mac herself doesn't feel right either。 As the series progressed, she became very astute and was able to keep a tight lid on her emotions when she needed to。 Here, she's completely at the mercy of them。 We've never seen Mac like this。 She turns back and fourth on whether or not she's going to uphold her responsibility to serve the Fae based on what she's feeling in the moment。 That's not Mac, and her sudden emotional uptick creates more problems for her than there would be if she acted more like herself here。As for the story itself, there's a lot introduced here for a final book。 I don't recall the Seelie ever being divided into seasonal kingdoms before this。 It's an interesting idea and it would be great to see that explored more。 But all we get of it is Azar, Severena, and Ixcythe。 The rest of the court is conveniently at war with itself and can't be reached。 We don't even get to see Spring, for the reason of "Jayne isn't a full fae and not worth considering。" I as the reader would have liked to see how Jayne handles being in Faery and dealing with his transformation。 I wish we could have seen more of the Unseelie Court as well。 There are now elemental kingdoms, the only fae from which we get to see is Masdann, who was written in solely as a means of killing Cruce。 With such huge expansions to the world, only being able to see what Moning felt was essential to progressing resolving the plot was disappointing。 It felt like we were being led through the plot rather than allowed to explore this amazing world she's created further, which is not the norm for a Fever book。The structure of the book is hit and miss as well。 Yes, not much happens for the first half of the book, but I like how the pages are spent exploring each character's inner monologues。 We get to know them better and know their motivations。 I particularly liked Ix's chapters and learning why she's so hostile。 But it's once things start happening that the trouble begins。 Everything gets resolved so quickly and neatly。 The issues in the first half of the book that seemed so monumentous and daunting felt boring in the second half。 It felt like nobody was ever in any real danger because everything was resolved so easily。 I stopped worrying about the characters because I knew they would be okay and onto their next challenge soon enough。Overall, KOSAL felt like a means of getting certain characters to their endpoints。 Ryodan needs to be king, so put Dani in danger in a place he can't get to。 Mac needs to be accepted by the Fae。 Create a problem that puts 99% of them out of commission。 (I also don't believe for a moment that once they get a handle on their emotions, they would accept Mac。 Mac's struggle to rule the Fae is far from over。) Cruce needs to die。 Give him someone who exists solely to betray him and don't explore any other part of his new world。 Nothing felt impactful or serious, like in previous installments。 That's likely partly because there was so much introduced so suddenly that needed to be wrapped up so quickly, but also because everything felt like a plot device。 I know Moning was suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning and I can understand from that why the great quotes about life are missing from this one (plus it's amazing and a testament to her that she was able to turn out a 500+ page book at all), but there's so much she created here! Not exploring any of it in favor of getting certain characters to their end points feels like a waste。 I'd really like to see more of this world and get that struggle between Mac and the Fae that I thought this was going to be about, but not if more installments are on the same caliper as this one。 。。。more

She didn't have a valid arc where she was traumatized first, before she slowly—very slowly, might I add—worked through the traumatizing experience。 She just sprang into action in the book like something which has made many girls and boys commit suicide didn't just happen to her。。。 repeatedly。Now in KOSAL, we get a scene where Cruce says (proclaims, really) that he's going to fuck/rape Mac。 And Mac just lies there, puts two and two in her head and says, in my own words, "Okay, I'll take this and come back stronger。" Uhm。。。what?Where's the horrified expression, the fear that you're about to experience Something Traumatizing Again? Okay, fine, for fairness, Mac did mention at some point in the book that she doesn't grieve when people she loves are hurt, or when she's hurt; she gets angry。 So where's that anger here, Mac? Shouldn't you at least scream at Cruce? Try to reason with him if you will (even though he's just mad at this point)? Shouldn't you at least ask why he's doing this? But no, Mac accepts it like a dutiful slave。 I don't understand。If Karen was looking to create a woman who couldn't be overcome by any trauma, including the most traumatizing experience of all, in my opinion, I would've suggested the way Queen Mary in Reign overcame her own sad experience。 It took time, but she was strong too; it was realistic, she acted like a woman who had just suffered something。 And at the end, she survived。 In summary, rape is a serious, sensitive subject and I felt it wasn't treated as such throughout this series。 Besides my dislike for Dani (something must be wrong with me if I still dislike our superhero to the end of this book), that was my only problem throughout this book and the series。 Thankfully, the relationship between Mac and Barrons overshadowed any other possible thing I could dislike about the Fever Series。 The way their absolute dislike and distrust in each other grew into profound devotion, compromise, and absolute trust throughout the series has to be the reason we all kept reading this, right? It's not a normal kind of love, and I loveee how Karen doesn't try to paint it as such, even to the end (they never exchange "I love you's", for one)。 That dark kind of "love", care, and understanding trumps every love story I can ever think of, even the Notebook, sorry y'all。 All in all, I'm so happy and sad the series ended the way it did。 It's eleven books for those who haven't read it, so it might seem a bit bulky。 But I assure you, once you start, you won't stop until you've read it all。 HIGHLY RECOMMEND! 。。。more

It kills me to rate this book so low, seeing as I loved and devoured everything else written by KMM。 This book just didn't have the same vibe as the rest。 It was a summary of events past and a conclusion to a series。 It missed the epicness that one becomes accustomed to when diving into the world of Mac and Dani。 It was nice to hear the characters again after so long, but as an epic adventure it just felt flat。 It doesn't mean I will stop rereading the Fever books until the spines crumble, becau It kills me to rate this book so low, seeing as I loved and devoured everything else written by KMM。 This book just didn't have the same vibe as the rest。 It was a summary of events past and a conclusion to a series。 It missed the epicness that one becomes accustomed to when diving into the world of Mac and Dani。 It was nice to hear the characters again after so long, but as an epic adventure it just felt flat。 It doesn't mean I will stop rereading the Fever books until the spines crumble, because it is one of the most amazing series out there with amazing and rounded characters, world building and exceptional writing。 It just means I'll skip this one when I do so。 。。。more

I loved this book! A great end to a great series。 I thought I would have a hard time jumping into a series I haven’t read in a few years but the glossary at the back got me caught up to speed and I was able to jump right in。 There’s some new characters (I adored Lyryka) and am very satisfied with the end。 5/5

Karin mentions in her dedication - “like MacKayla Lane, we transform…from innocent, to shattered, to warrior, to wise woman。” That is what the journey of reading this series has been like。 Through the entire roller coaster of emotions, cliffhangers literal screaming at the pages, it doesn’t feel possible that the end has come, but it has。 And what a fantastic journey it has been。

Rating: 2。7The ending was anticlimactic to me because it seemed short and rushed。 Not to mention all the POVs this book had with the side characters and their HEAs as well。 I mean, seriously? Why couldn't the other characters have their own books as well? Their character development would've fleshed out a lot better, instead of being rushed and toned down。 They deserved a lot better than this I think。 But nooooooooo, it had to be all crammed up into one big book where they had to share page time Rating: 2。7The ending was anticlimactic to me because it seemed short and rushed。 Not to mention all the POVs this book had with the side characters and their HEAs as well。 I mean, seriously? Their character development would've fleshed out a lot better, instead of being rushed and toned down。 They deserved a lot better than this I think。 But nooooooooo, it had to be all crammed up into one big book where they had to share page time。 A HUGE-ass reason why I don't like reading books with multiple POVs or where there's more than one character's story being told。 I just 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘵 connect with any of them, because as soon as I do, it jumps to the next character and I lose that connection and there's just no getting it back。 And what was with the issue with Dani and the royal hunters? It was so random and came out of no where。 No importance at all。But whatever。 It's all wrapped up and done。 Hopefully KMM's next book/series won't be as messy and chaotic as this。 。。。more

Yet another awesome installment in a great series。 I have enjoyed every single book。 The lifelike characters definitely make it something I can get hooked on。

The three star is for and because of Barrons。

Had a hard time reading this and then read the author's note - I didn't realize how sick KMM was through the end of writing this series, which gave me a little perspective。 I'm always team Barrons/Mac (sorry, rabid Dani fans) and was happy with the last challenge they faced together, even if there felt like a lot of excess that wasn't needed for me。。。 Had a hard time reading this and then read the author's note - I didn't realize how sick KMM was through the end of writing this series, which gave me a little perspective。 I'm always team Barrons/Mac (sorry, rabid Dani fans) and was happy with the last challenge they faced together, even if there felt like a lot of excess that wasn't needed for me。。。 。。。more
